HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (HBOT)

 FAQs - (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment used for specific medical conditions. It may be the primary treatment for some disorders, but can be used as part of a combined program involving medications, dressing changes, nutrition and/or other wellness practices. During HBOT, the patient is placed in a chamber, which is pressurized at 1.3 ATA. This increases the oxygen level in the blood and ultimately in the body tissues.

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy puts your body into a pressurized state, like being 10 feet underwater. It concentrates and compresses the air and fills the holes in the cell membranes (caused from toxins in air, soil, etc.). This prevents voltage loss and increases your energy. HBOT works as a supercharger for your cells and sets the body up to be in a great state of natural healing.

  • • Head Injuries: Recent & Past Concussions & Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) •  Migraine Headaches •  Parkinson’s Disease •  Alzheimer’s Disease•  Multiple Sclerosis •  Huntington’s Disease •  Spinal Cord Injuries •  Pre-Stroke Prevention and Post-Stroke Recovery •  Diabetic Neuropathy •  Erectile Dysfunction •  Cancer: as a Conjunctive Therapy •  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) •  Effects of Aging Skin •  Osteoarthritis •  Rheumatoid Arthritis •  Fibromyalgia •  Crohn’s Disease •  Ulcerative Colitis •  Atherosclerosis •  Diabetes – Type 1 & 2 •  Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) •  Inflammatory Pain •  Chronic Infections   (Lyme, Reactivated Mono, Mold, etc.) •  Chronic Fatigue Syndrome •  Any Mitochondrial Disease

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is pain-free. Patients lie or sit comfortably in the chamber. Patients can read, do crossword puzzles, book work, or nap if they wish. During certain stages of the treatment, patients may experience a sensation of fullness in their ears. This is similar to that which is felt while flying in an airplane or driving down a mountain, as the eardrum responds to changes in pressure. As part of the introduction to treatment, patients are taught several easy methods to avoid ear discomfort.

  • Soft Chambers: also known as mild hyperbaric chambers or portable hyperbaric chambers, are inflatable chambers that achieve internal pressures of 1.3 ATA (atmospheres).

Hard Chambers: Hard hyperbaric chambers are capable of reaching higher pressures than soft hyperbaric chambers. These chambers are typically found in hospitals and are most commonly used more in emergency situations. Hard hyperbaric chambers are approved by the FDA to treat many medical conditions.

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is prescribed by a physician and performed under medical supervision. Like all medical treatments and procedures, there are some risks associated with HBOT. These risks are quite rare and will be discussed in detail prior to starting therapy. Overall, HBOT is extremely safe. Okoboji Wellness Clinic is medically directed and staffed by physicians and nurses specially trained in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

  • To benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, you’ll likely need more than one session. The number of sessions is dependent upon your medical condition. Some conditions, such as carbon monoxide poisoning, might be treated in three visits. Others, such as non-healing wounds or dementia, may require 40 treatments or more. To effectively treat approved medical conditions, HBOT is usually part of a comprehensive treatment plan provided with other therapies and supplements, designed to fit your individual needs.
